At the Amazing Iris Garden we know that growing the perfect Iris is all about knowing what to do and when to do it.
New Zealand’s varied environmental conditions can be challenging but by following these simple steps you’ll be well on your way to growing a faultless Iris bloom:
We dig our irises in February for delivery as this is the best time in our area to move and divide Bearded Irises. The Irises are transported bare-rooted. The plant is quite happy to do this, just ensure that you plant it shortly after you receive it.
- When planting ensure the rhizome is sitting on top of the ground with the roots firmly secured in the soil.
- Water your plant in for the first 2 weeks, from then on it should be fine.
- In June feed your irises with either Dolomite or lime.
- July/August with the onset of spring a dose of superphosphate and Potash for strengthening of plants and good blooms.
- A spray of copper as a precautionary against rust.
- After they bloom snap the stalk, close to the base of the rhizome. Brace the rhizome with one hand and snap the stalk backwards away from the main plant.
- Irises like to have their rhizomes baking in the sun and don’t mind the frost.
- High humidity i.e. warm moist days, are conditions irises don’t like. This can cause rot in the rhizome.
- Keep dead leaves and foliage away from your rhizomes. Keep beds clean from weeds.
